In iron‐deficiency anaemia erythrocytes concentrate added glycine‐1‐ 14 C establishing cellular: extracellular distribution ratios distinctly higher than normal. This uphill transport is abolished at low temperature and by substitution of a potassium rich, sodium poor medium. lodoacetamide is inhibitory. Added glycine and sarcosine also reduce the distribution ratio. The uptake of glycine is considered in the light of known changes in erythrocyte metabolism and age in iron‐deficiency anaemia.
