Bernard's concept of the milieu interieur was a vital step in our understanding of the human body. It is funda- mental to realize that much of our biological activity is concerned in the maintenance of the so-called internal environment. But it is becoming increasingly clear that a rigid approach to the body constants which constitute this internal environment is no longer wholly acceptable.
