Refractivity virial coefficients of pure ethylene and five mixtures of ethylene–argon have been determined at 303 K. Combination of the dielectric second virial coefficient (Bε) and the refractivity second virial coefficient (BR) gives the contribution of the quadrupole induced dipole effect (BOR =Bε −BR) which leads to the determination of the average quadrupole moment of (3.33±0.16)×10−26 esu cm2 for pure C2H4 and (3.23±0.38)×10−26 esu cm2 for C2H4–Ar. These values agree well with the values of the quadrupole moment determined by other methods.
