We have fabricated a composite ceramic rod that consists of a 0.8 at. % Nd:Y 3 Al 5 O 12 core part and an Y 3 Al 5 O 12 clad part. A high-power laser diode side-pumped cw laser was demonstrated with the composite ceramic rod. A maximum output of 70 W with a slope efficiency of 29% was obtained at 1064 nm. The laser output with the composite rod was about 25% higher than that of noncomposite rod under the same conditions. Thermally induced birefringence and the thermal lens effect of both rods were also investigated.
