A previous paper (Demerec and Z. Hartman, 1956) presented evidence that in Salmonella typhimurium the four known loci controlling tryptophan synthesis (try A, B, C, and D) are very closely linked on the chromosome, presumably adjacent to one another, and also that one of the six known loci concerned with cystine synthesis (cysB) is sufficiently close to them so that all five may be carried in one transducing fragment. This paper will report a study of the occurrence of recombinations among these five loci, and will attempt to interpret the findings by outlining a mechanism that would account for them.
