An account is presented of some effects arising from the weakness in coupling between radiation-induced free radicals and the surrounding lattice. The electron spin resonance technique was employed to investigate irradiated amino acids, and the results obtained are compared with theoretical predictions. It was found that a mechanism similar to the inhomogeneous broadening described by Portis was occurring, and the spin-lattice relaxation times were of the order of 10—5 seconds.
