We have calculated the lower excited π electronic states of diphenyl, employing Pariser approximation and assuming empirical values for the atomic Coulomb integrals: (11|11)=10.959 ev, (11|22)=6.895 ev, (44|55)=6.546 ev. We have obtained B 3 u state for the lowest excited singlet, against the B 2 u state obtained by London where the products of wave functions for benzene molecule were utilized. A method to treat the phenomena of phosphorescence has been suggested and the group theoretical classification of combination by L–S interaction is discussed.
