The authors describe a simple and flexible counter interface, which can reduce the typical eight-bit position information of commercially available channel-plate detectors to a smaller number of counting channels. The number and width of these channels may be chosen arbitrarily under software control, according to the experimental requirements. It is demonstrated that fast data processing is then possible using a standard personal computer.
