We report mainly on theoretical investigations of electrohydrodynamic convection in nematic liquid crystals under the influence of a destabilizing magnetic field. We find that the slope of the threshold curve as a function of the magnetic field changes at first discontinuously at some point before the bifurcation becomes subcritical at high magnetic fields. The results are in qualitative agreement with few existing experimental results.
