A recent study (Hamermesh and Soss [5]) demonstrated the fruitfulness of applying economic analysis to suicidal behavior. Among white males, both in a time series and in a cross section, increased income generally lowers suicide rates, while higher unemployment increases them, especially among older age groups. All of these empirical findings suggest that further applications to suicidal behavior among other groups may be worthwhile.
