In 21 adult patients dying after renal transplantation, tissues examined by light microscopy and/or culture showed evidence of infection by cytomegalovirus (CMV). The morphologic appearances in these 21 patients are presented and contrasted with those of 29 other renal transplant patients in whom infection by CMV was not detected. It is concluded that CMV may be an important potential cause of injury to the lungs and the liver of the allograft patient and also that this virus may contribute to death.
