We present the results of an experimental and numerical study of the flows near multiple bifurcations in a rotating annulus. The numerical results suggest a mechanism for the production of quasi-periodic and irregular motion. This is indeed observed over a wide range of parameter space in the experiments. In addition we have found the onset of chaos to occur by both increase and decrease of the Reynolds number R.
