An experimental procedure is described for making independent, in-material measurements of longitudinal and transverse particle velocity histories simultaneously in a combined compression-shear loading, plate-impact experiment. The experimental method is based on the suggestion of J. W. Swegle [J. Appl. Phys. 49, 4280 (1978)]. Representative data are shown from measurements in Carrara marble (polycrystalline calcium carbonate). The potential advantages of using this method for measuring complex material response are discussed.
