A theoretical method for the reduction of measurements on the decay of elastic precursor shock fronts is presented. The method yields values of the initial pressure-volume relaxation path behind the front; it requires no assumptions about the form of the constitutive relation. The method is illustrated by application to data on lithium fluoride.
