Measurements from the ground of the oxygen red line at 6300 A in the day airglow are reported for the period from June 1962 through December 1963. The observed intensity ranged between 50 and 5 kR, a pronounced variation often being apparent from one day to the next and even during the course of a single day. It does not seem possible to explain this behavior only by means of photochemical reactions of the type considered by Brandt, and it is suggested that a significant contribution may arise from excitation of oxygen atoms by electrons in the F region of the ionosphere.
