The ability of ICl ₃ to activate electrophilic substrates through halogen bonding and its catalytic activity towards the ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide is demonstrated in this communication. Association of techniques highlights the production of narrowly dispersed PLA of predictable molecular weights from this commercially available molecule.
