The adsorption of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide on a high area TiO 2 −SiO 2 mixed oxide powder has been studied by transmission infrared spectroscopy. It has been found that hydrogen bonding of this molecule to Si−OH groups occurs through both the Cl and the S moieties and that characteristic Si−OH red-shifts are found for each of the hydrogen bonds produced. A similar pattern of hydrogen bonding is found for the interaction of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide with OH groups on TiO 2 surfaces.
