Methods of using Hall probes to measure dipole fields, and thus specimen magnetization, are analysed and tested. ( I, H ) loops can be plotted automatically for crystals with a total moment of 0·1 e.m.u., showing discontinuities of 0·01 e.m.u. A method of measuring the absolute value of I s is described and tested on weakly magnetic crystals, the accuracy being to about 2% for a total moment of 0·1 e.m.u.
