We developed new simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers in different species of yam ( Dioscorea sp.). A microsatellite‐enriched bank was created from Dioscorea alata , Dioscorea abyssinica and Dioscorea praehensilis . Sixteen polymorphic loci were characterized. Several of these markers are transferable to species of other Dioscorea sections.
