A Probabilistic Model of a Self-Organizing File System

A probabilistic analysis of a file organizing scheme is presented. The subject has both practical and theoretical aspects. On the one hand it provides an evaluation and design tool for a new file strategy, and on the other hand it may be considered a novel modification of renewal processes, inasmuch as—in a certain sense—birth and death of renewal families is considered.
