Consumer empowerment, a current emphasis in social work, is also relevant to research. This review of a participatory research approach based upon an empowerment model, shows how empowerment principles can be implemented in social work research. It argues that a participatory approach can avoid some of the pitfalls of more traditional, positivist research models, and can produce more humane, rational and liberating knowledge.
