Quality improvement teams (QITs) are central to the corporate pursuit of continuous quality improvement. All too often the liabilities of such teams are ignored or underestimated while the assets they bring to the quality initiative are taken as given. The conversion of team liabilities into team assets is a complex process in which the facilitator has a key role to play. This article attempts to discern the liabilities and assets of teams, and to delineate the essential part to be played by the facilitator in the conversion of QITs in debit into QITs in credit.
