The importance of particle‐shape in sediment‐transportation has been pointed out by numerous writers. Comparatively few experimental data are available, however, and even these are partly confused by the use of two geometrically distinct shape‐characteristics. Some writers emphasize the angularity of the corners and edges, whereas others emphasize the general form, that is, the ratios between length, breadth, and thickness of the particles. Most commonly both aspects are included in the same classification.
