Conferences focusing on professional preparation of health educators have played an integral role in the health education profession. The purpose of this article is to provide a review of selected key conferences and reports regarding professional preparation practices and development of professional standards. Original documents containing conference proceedings and recommendations were analyzed. Nearly 50 years of major contributions to professional preparation literature in health education and teacher preparation programs are presented. This article begins with descriptions of key conferences such as Jackson's Mill and Pere Marquette and extends to more recent national conferences, such as Bethesda I and II.
