beta -Mercaptoethylamine (MEA) lowers the sensitivity of E. coli to x irradiation. The effect is greater than the effect of oxygen removal by nitrogen treatment. lt is larger for cells suspended in 0.85% NaCl than for those in 0.066 M phosphate buffer. The degree of protection depends on the pH of the suspension, the effect being greater at pH 7 than at pH 6. MEA treatment yieIds the same surviving fraction whether or not oxygen is present in the cell suspension at the time of addition of the compound.
