Ground-state properties of the quasi-one-dimensional electron gas in a quantum wire are calculated in the random-phase approximation (RPA), the ladder approximation, and the Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sj\"olander approximation. Numerical results are given for the exchange-correlation energy and the compressibility as a function of the electron density and the width of the wire. The dielectric response of the system has been calculated in the local field approximation and compared with the RPA result.
