The design and construction of a high resolution electron spectrometer in which electrons are transmitted through thin films is described. It utilizes a retarding field with subsequent deflection of the electrons by a cylindrical magnetic prism. Tests for, and corrections and precautions against, possible errors are given with details of the results of the measurements of the spectra of Al and Cu.
