A manometric study of vapour density has given informations on the bi‐molecular association in alcohols and amines by hydrogen bonding. The heat of the bonding was founded to be of the order of 3.0 kcal. mole−1 for the OH–O bond of n. butanol, 5.8 kcal. mole−1 for the NH–N bond of n.butylamine and a still higher value for the NH–O bond between alcohol and amine. The association constant at a given temperature of the amine is lower than that of the alcohol due to steric conditions related to the existence of one non‐bonded electronic pair on the nitrogen atom while there are two on the oxygen atom. The association constant between alcohol and amine is intermediate between the two values above, though closer to that of the alcohol.
