The photooxidation of isotactic polypropylene films with different morphological structure and various thicknesses was studied. The progress of photodestruction was followed by measurements of the intrinsic viscosity and by infrared spectroscopy. The results reveal a clear effect of the thermal history of the polymer on the photooxidation process. Thermal preoxidation during melt processing or crystallization at high temperatures in air cause the formation of hydroperoxides which accelerate the photooxidation process. No essential influence of the morphological structure on the photooxidation process was observed.
