The energy levels of the 3d5g and 3d6g configurations of Ti III were calculated in intermediate coupling and including effective electrostatic interaction. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment was obtained, with mean errors amounting to 0.29 cm -1 and 0.20 cm -1 for 3d5g and 3d6g respectively. It was found that the levels have quite pure 'names' in jK coupling. The importance of the effective electrostatic interaction in improving the calculated pair energies has been established. Hartree-Fock calculations of the configurations 3dng (n=5-8) were also performed in order to gain a better understanding of the mode of change of the various parameters with the increase of the principal quantum number n of the g electron.
