A brief historical survey is given of the effects of electric fields on phosphors, and of recent work leading to the development of a practical light source. The phosphor preparation is described, and details of dielectric requirements, lamp construction, and optical and electrical characteristics of the lamps discussed. Reference is made to work on the effects of pulsed d.c. excitation, and on the microscopical examination of electroluminescent single crystals. Current theories of the mechanism of electroluminescence are briefly discussed.
