The changes in frequency of the 1Lh and 1Lb absorption bands of naphthalene have been measured as a function of diluent density for naphthalene dissolved in various compressed nonpolar gases. A relationship is shown to exist between a thermodynamic internal energy derived from previously reported solubility measurements and the spectral shifts. This internal energy is also compared to estimates of internal energy based on dispersion force theory.
