A method has been developed for measuring toxicological levels of chromium in serum. The procedure involves preliminary decomposition of the organic matter of the sample. Chromium is then isolated from aqueous solutions of the ashed samples via chelation-extraction using 0.3 M trifluoroacetylacetone in benzene. After removal of excess chelating agent by alkaline washing, the benzene solutions of chromium trifluoroactylacetone [Cr(TFA)3] are analyzed by gas chromatography employing a QF-1 (5 percent w/w) column packing and a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector. Conditions of temperature and time for the analysis have been optimized and special equipment has been developed. High recoveries of chromium (III) added to serum are obtained.
