Samples of active titania gels were prepared by the hydrolysis of benzene solutions of titanium tetra‐n‐butoxide with steam in the presence of various buffer solutions, covering the pH range 2·3—10·5. The surface properties of the gels were determined from gas adsorption measurements carried out at ‐ 195·8°. It is shown that the gels are porous, with high surface areas which fall off sharply for gels prepared at pH above 8·5. Pore radii are small, being in every case less than values observed for the neutral gels reported in Part I of this series, with a tendency to a maximum close to the isoelectric point of titania.
