Streptococcus mutansendocarditis was initially diagnosed as enterococcal endocarditis. The organisms were indistinguishable by testing in two commonly used diagnostic media, Enterococcosel andS faecalisbroths. Of 97 additionalS viridanscultures isolated, 10% produced false-positive reactions in Enterococcosel broth and 1% inS faecalisbroth. The identification of an "enterococcus" that is sensitive to lincomycin by the use of these media should be confirmed by growth in 6.5% sodium chloride broth and on eosin methylene blue agar.
