The nonlinear mixing of two oppositely propagating waves can be used to perform the convolution of two waveforms. We have examined the nonlinear cross sections for this interaction based on waves guided by both dielectric and metal films. The numerical analysis shows that optimum efficiencies are obtained with dielectric film guided waves and that useful cross sections can be obtained with organic nonlinear materials.
