A comparative study on the thermotropic transition of phospholipid bilayer membrane is carried out for a series of novel partially fluorinated dimyristoylphosphatidylcholines with different perfluoroalkyl chain lengths (Fn-DMPC, n = 2, 4, 6, 8) by using differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The Fn-DMPC membranes exhibit thermally induced chain-melting transition in a significant Rf-chain length-dependent manner. In particular, F8-DMPC, whose perfluorooctyl groups are likely to aggregate into the hexagonal structure in the phospholipid bilayer, shows the notably high transition temperature of 64.4 °C compared to 24.1 °C for DMPC.
