Optical second harmonic generation is strongly influenced by ferroelectric domain structures. The second harmonic intensity I(2) has been measured during ferroelectric switching in NaNO2. I(2) proves to be proportional to the number N of domains, so that the time dependence of I(2) is determined by that of N. I(2)(t) is compared with the switching pulse i(t). From bot some information about the behaviour of the mean domain thickness during switching is obtained.
