The distintegration of boron by neutrons has been studied by a number of workers, and it has been estabblished that it may take place in accordance with two equations 5B10 + 0n1 → 3Li7 + 2He4 + Q1, (1) →1H3 + 2He4 + 2He4 + Q2. (2) From the values of the nuclear masses at present accepted, it may be calculated that the energy release Q1 is 2.99 X 106 e-volts, while Q2 is only about 0.4 X 106 e-volts. Observed disintegrations, if caused by slow neutrons, must therefore be of the two-particle type described by equation(1).
