The deformation-dipole model for alkali halides is extended to include anharmonic effects. The linear coefficient of thermal expansion of KBr is calculated without adjustable parameters. Anharmonicities in the nearest-neighbor overlap forces, in the long-range Coulomb forces, and in the deformability of the ions are included in the model. Good agreement with experiment is obtained.
