Recent attempts to describe the magnetic induction changes induced by tensile or compressive loads in a variety of carbon steels have centered on the empirical law proposed by Jiles and Atherton. Their model gives good predictions of such changes for points on the initial induction curve and from major loop points. Results in this work show that departures from the law are widespread for less simple magnetic histories for 3% nickel steel and iron specimens. This suggests that increased complexity will be required in future modeling work. A mechanism is proposed that explains these departures in terms of a distribution of domain wall pinning site energies.
