Equisetum Linn. is one of the oldest living genera of vascular plants and is also the sole living representative of a large and ancient group Equisetales. It comprises about twenty-five species (Billington, 1952) of worldwide distribution except for Australia and New Zealand. For this reason a comparison of the cytological constitution of various species from different parts of the world is desirable.
