Important principles of social-personality development, particularly its dependence on differential stimulation, can often be uncovered by observing uncommon child-rearing modes. One very different and theoretically interesting such mode occurs in the Israel kibbutz, where children are raised collectively but also have considerable contact with their parents. The method presented here has been devised to describe caretaking themes and social contacts within the context of child-rearing. It is applied to a sample of kibbutz infants, preparatory to comparisons with other environments.
