Systematic literature review reveals nine barrier dimensions and critical governance needs in sustainable IT adoption, highlighting strategic pathways for digital transformation.
Despite the rapid growth of sustainability research, there is still no integrated understanding of how environmental, economic, and social sustainability converge within IT operations, creating a critical gap that this study addresses. The research examines the emerging need to incorporate sustainability in Information Technology operations because of the growing concerns of the environment, economics, and society. Using a guided systematic literature review process of 66 peer-reviewed research studies (2010–2025), the literature review synthesizes major practices, frameworks and barriers that affect sustainable IT adoption. The analysis defines nine fundamental dimensions of sustainability barriers, from digital vision, governance to resources optimization, and ethical IT practices. The results show important shortcomings of standardized sustainable aspects concerning IT and the decisive role of governance and resources. The study provides a summarized model for achieving sustainable IT implementation and actionable recommendations for organizations, policymakers, and researchers. This study adds value through its goal of establishing a joint understanding of sustainable IT practices and developing a roadmap that follows the future in supporting sustainable alignment in digital transformation with actionable strategies and advancements.
