Key result
Overweight and obesity are linked to ~1.6-fold higher arterial stiffness in normotensive men.
Why the study?
Increased arterial wall stiffness in overweight and obese individuals is considered a mechanism in cardiovascular disease development, prompting assessment of vascular wall condition in these men.
Does overweight or obesity increase vascular wall stiffness in normotensive men?
Cross-Sectional (n=164)
Does overweight or obesity increase vascular wall stiffness in normotensive men?
Overweight and obese normotensive men exhibit significantly increased arterial stiffness and impaired endothelial function compared to those with normal BMI.
May indicate early vascular impairment in overweight normotensive men; leaves open causality and need for longitudinal intervention trials.
An increase in the rigidity of the vascular walls in overweight and obese individuals is considered as one of the mechanisms of the cardiovascular diseases development. OBJECTIVE To assess the state of the vascular wall in overweight and obese men. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved 164 men with normal blood pressure aged 26 to 69 years (mean age 44.7±8.7 years) who were divided into 2 groups depending on the body mass index (BMI): Group 1 — 38 patients with normal BMI, group 2 — 126 patients with overweight or obesity. The study included an assessment of anthropometric parameters, photoplethysmography, echocardiography, sphygmography, and a test with flow-dependent vasodilation (FDVD) using the Celermeier method. RESULTS It was revealed that the CAVI index and the thickness of epicardial fat in patients of the 2-nd group were 1.6 and 1.7 times higher, respectively (*p* <0.001), and the FDVD indices were 1.5 times lower (*p* <0.001) compared with 1-st group. According to photoplethysmography at overweight and obesity the subjects showed a significant decrease in such indicators as PD (*p* <0.001), ED (*p* =0.019), and an increase in % ED (*p* =0.001), VA (*p* =0.044), RI (*p* =0.011) and PR (*p* <0.001). CONCLUSION Arterial stiffness should be assessed in overweight and obese men.

Дадаева et al. (2021) conducted a cross-sectional in Overweight and obesity (n=164). Overweight and obesity vs. Normal body mass index (BMI) was evaluated on CAVI index (1.6 times higher, p=<0.001). Overweight and obesity in normotensive men were associated with significantly higher arterial stiffness (CAVI index 1.6 times higher, p<0.001) compared to normal BMI.
