Races 0 and 5 of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri (Foe), which induce foliar yellowing and vascular wilt in chickpea (Cicer arietinum), respectively, produced extracellular polygalacturonase (PG) and pectate lyase (PL) activities when they were cultured in a mineral medium supplemented with chickpea cell walls. PG and PL from Foc‐0 and PL from Foc‐5 behaved as endoenzymes, whereas PG from Foc‐5 was an exo‐enzyme. PG from both races had the same pH optimun (4.5). PL of Foc‐0 and Foc‐5 had an absolute Ca2+ requirement and a pH optimun of 9.5 and 10.5, respectively. Comparisons of pectic enzyme production by Foc‐0 and Foc‐5 grown on cell walls from three chickpea cultivars showed that: 1) the amount of pectic enzymes produced by Foc‐0 was about twice than that produced by Foc‐5, 2) the time course of PG production by both Foe races was similar (maximum enzyme activity in 4‐day‐old cultures), 3) PL was co‐induced with PG in Foc‐5 cultures whereas in Foc‐0 cultures the peak of PL was delayed with respect to that of PG by 5–7 days, and 4) cell walls from the chickpea cvs. PV‐24 (susceptible to both races of Foe) and JG‐62 (resistant to Foc‐0 but susceptible to Foc‐5) allowed similar high rates of pectic enzyme synthesis by each Foe race while PG and, mainly, PL production on walls from the chickpea cv. WR‐315 (resistant to both races of Foe) was notably low. PG and PL were able to degrade chickpea cell walls. Degradability of wall preparations without ionically bound proteins was not related to host resistance or susceptibility. In contrast, walls containing ionically bound proteins from the susceptible cv. PV‐24 were more extensively degraded by PG and PL than similar preparations from the resistant cv. WR‐315.
