An approach to the solution of multidimensional dynamic programs is presented which differs from most decomposition methods currently used in the optimization of water resources systems. The basic concept is directly dependent on certain characteristics of incremental dynamic programing (IDP). The method, referred to as multilevel incremental dynamic programing, results in a marked reduction in computing time and thus increases the power of IDP as a tool in the optimization of multidimensional deterministic systems.
