Although only a few human cell types have proved amenable to continuous culture, use of these cell lines has been of great value in elucidating the ways in which various classes of genetic diseases are expressed, and, in some cases, has permitted precise mapping of the chromosomal location of the aberrant genes. Cell cultures have also been successfully employed in designing therapeutic modalities.
