Total effective hydration numbers for a variety of strong electrolytes are deduced from temperature dependence of proton shifts. Individual hydration of the cations and anions are speculated. The cations of all the alkali elements appear to have a relatively consistent hydration of 3 ± 0.5 when the concentrations are below 5m. Above this concentration ion pairing becomes important. For magnesium and calcium salts ion pairing is important above 2m.
