For a thorough understanding of the descending of the motor system originating in the , knowledge about the anatomy and function the structures in the more caudally located of the central nervous system is indispensable. this paper an overview will be presented these caudal structures in brainstem and spinal as far as they concern the motor system, (sections 1 to 3). After that the descending pathways to the so-called somatic motor are reviewed (section 4). Finally, a summary the many newly discovered pathways to the limbic system will be given (section 5). In the Conclusions section a concept will be , which subdivides the multitude of pathways into three motor systems. In this the motoneurons will be considered to to the peripheral motor system, (motor , which is the motoneuronal cell body-motor -muscle). The first motor system consists of interneurons involved in motor reflex pathways. second motor system contains the of the so-called somatic motor system, the third motor system comprises the motor related to the limbic system. The second third motor systems act upon the neurons the first motor system and to a limited extent on motoneurons, but not on each other. importance and strength of the third motor , which, untill recendy, was virtually unknown, be emphasized
